Middletown, CT – The Measuring Division of Kaman Precision Products, Inc., a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance, precision non-contact position measuring systems, will highlight high precision sensors and systems ideal for space applications at the Space Tech Expo & Conference, May 23-25, 2017, in the Pasadena Convention Center, Pasadena, CA, Booth 4001. On display will be Kaman’s line of Extreme Environment high-precision displacement sensors and systems, the KD-5100 differential measurement system, and the digiVIT Digital Variable Impedance Transducer and new Digital Differential Impedance Transducer (Digital DIT).With their proven design and rugged all-welded and hermetic construction, the Kaman Extreme Environment sensors and systems on display are ideal for rocket engine validation testing. They are also an excellent choice for applications that require high accuracy, high reliability, and structural integrity, including nuclear reactors, steam and gas turbines, chemical processes, and high temperature processing. Three separate systems are available, specifically designed for high pressure, low temperature, and high temperature conditions. The Extreme Environment sensors and systems work in operating temperatures ranging from -320°F to +1000°F (+1200°F short term). Displacement systems withstand pressures up to 3500 or 5000 pound-force per square inch (psi). Their dual-coil sensor design effectively minimizes temperature effects. All of Kaman’s high temperature transducers are made with hermetically sealed, all laser-welded Inconel housings and use and Inconel-jacketed, mineral-insulated cable.

The KD-1925, KD-1950 and KD-1975 Extreme Environment displacement sensors use KDM-8206EE signal conditioning electronics. Available are a full variable channeled rack (with up to 12 channels), a half rack system (with up to 6 channels), and a NEMA housing enclosure.

Also on display is the KD-5100 differential measurement system, which provides resolution to a nanometer of positional change. With its proven stable design, extremely small size, and low power consumption, the KD-5100 is ideal for night vision systems, precision telescope positioning, fast steering mirrors (FSM) for space-based and airborne applications, and image stabilization systems. Featuring a small package size – only 2 x 2.12 x 0.75 inches thick – the KD-5100 is a good choice for applications where space is a limiting factor. It is manufactured to MIL-H-38534, with MIL-SPEC components used throughout the electronics module wherever possible. The KD-5100 features rugged construction, with a mean time between failures of better than 238,000 hours in a space flight environment and 55,000 hours in a tactical environment. Kaman also offers the DIT-5200L, a commercial version of the KD-5100, for use in applications where MIL-SPEC requirements, size, weight, and power consumption are not critical.

The Digital DIT on display provides a standard serial peripheral interface (SPI) or direct access for high speed communication performance. Using a digital interface like the Digital DIT provides advantages in measurement system integrity over analog systems. For applications that require a digital output, using the SPI bus provides a standardized method to communicate with most embedded controllers, and it can be multiplexed with other devices. It is ideal for cloud-based networking applications, supporting the billions of connected devices and apps expected with the rise of the Industrial Internet of Things.
